MOVIE SYNOPSIS

Janji Joni / Joni’s Promise

Film. It might be the greatest gift of art to human beings. We all know how a film is made: it is written, shot, edited, and then it can be screened and enjoyed by the people in theatres. But not many people know the role of this young 22 years old young man named JONI in the overall process mentioned above. He is the man behind the scene. He is the one who determines whether we can watch the movie in the theatre or not. He is a reel deliveryman. When Joni is on duty, a film reel will be delivered on time so the spectators will never see this sign on the screen: “SORRY, WAITING FOR THE NEXT REEL.” That is Joni’s promise.

But one day, it seems that the whole town is conspiring against him, making it difficult for him to deliver the last reel on time, just when he has something big at stake, a promise to the girl of his future. Joni has to deal with so many eccentric characters, small roads of Jakarta that are similar to labyrinth, competing with time to fulfill his promise. Will Joni make it? Is his battle a waste?

Arisan! / The Gathering!

“Arisan” is a unique Indonesian social gathering in which a group of friends meets monthly, puts money into a pot, and then draws lots to see who takes home the cash. But really the lottery is often just an excuse for gossip and bragging. One such arisan is presided over by Andien, with her seemingly perfect life and family and her good friends Sakti and Meimei. Sakti is a handsome, closeted architect who is determined to overcome his desires and find a wife. Meimei is similarly desperate—only her goal is to get pregnant to hold on to her philandering husband. When Sakti and Meimei fall for the same guy, Andien’s ideal life begins to fall apart, and the circle must grapple with the shifting dynamics of their friendship and the nature of trust. ARISAN! is an upbeat, sexy, and touching story of love and friendship in contemporary Indonesia.
